I write to clarify my position in reference to your report 'Government 'ignores Putonghua': RTHK' (Education Post, July 21). I did not criticise the role of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (Scolar) on the promotion of Putonghua. Your report rightly pointed out that I am a member of Scolar. I would not oppose a policy which I have voted to support in a Scolar meeting. That is simply not my style. Quite to the contrary, I said I understood and agreed with the priorities set by Scolar and I supported the launching of English Day first, given the constraints of the manpower and resources.
