Pics of the week
So many galleries are trying to ride on the popularity of Vietnamese art that collectors really have to sift through the large and varied quality of paintings that show in Hong Kong to find what's worth acquiring. So it comes as bit of a surprise that a very promising show that begins this week is actually put together not by a professional curator, but by a banker/art enthusiast. Manisha Khemka recently put up three shows of Vietnamese contemporary art in her home and received such a good response that she is trying her hand at exhibiting at the Rotunda for the first time.
Entitled Vietnam Originals, some of the names appearing are familiar, like Nguyen Thanh Binh and Dang Xuan Hoa. But what caught our eyes are the expressive portraits by Nguyen Linh (right) of ordinary people.
August 17 to 25. The Rotunda, Exchange Square, Central. Open daily. Tel: 2522 7477.
One gallery employee wrote us to say that a recent announcement in this column about its summer sale drew enthusiastic buyers to the gallery, with eight paintings sold in one day. So here is another for collectors to check out. Palette Collections Gallery, which specialises in contemporary Chinese painters, has reduced its prices on a great selection of works. Expect 10 to 50 per cent discounts for oil paintings by Zhang Jinli, landscapes by Ying Qi, watercolour portraits from Ma Mingsong, and abstract works by Wang Weidong, whose Dreaming Dragonfly (right) will be among the featured works.
Until August 31. 5/F, 23 D'Aguilar Street, Central. Monday to Saturday 10.30am-7pm. Tel: 2522 5928.
Yan Gallery is showing some of its best-selling artists' works. Two very popular names, Chu Hung, the China-born, San Francisco-based painter whose 'caged birds' theme has garnered a solid following, and Beijing's Bob Yan, known for his expressive oil paintings, are featured alongside mainland artists.
Until August 31. 77 Wyndham Street, Central. Monday to Saturday, 10am-6pm; Sunday 1pm-5pm. Tel: 2139 2345.
