Late warning on school closures annoys parents and students
Updated at 1.15pm:
Students and parents on Monday complained of being told too late about school closures, as heavy rain forced a complete washout on the first full day of the new school year.
Many were already on their way to school when the Education Department announced single and morning session schools would be closed for the day.
Some, especially those from the outlying islands, said they should have been informed of the closures earlier.
The department said it had been in contact with the Weather Observatory since 4am and had followed the set guidelines.
However, it admitted it had decided to close schools well before the actual announcement at 6.15am. The department said it was prevented from issuing the information earlier due to temporary technical problems.
