Window opportunity


Art Windows, a series of art installations by 24 local photographers, painters, video and graphic artists, including Ellen Pau, Almond Chu, Alan Chan and Hung Keung, will be displayed in the windows of select Joyce, The Body Shop, GOD, Millie's, Seibu, Offspin and Kitterick locations until October 30. There will also be a talk by Boris Groys, director of Vienna's Academy of the Arts, at 7pm on October 24 in Seibu, Pacific Place (tel: 2869-8042, or see www.artwindows.org). For those more interested in couture than culture, Joyce is holding an exhibition of Barney Cheng's glamorous confections in its New World Tower shop until Wednesday. On display are 12 gowns, including six modernised cheongsams and the much-photographed dress Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actress Michelle Yeoh wore to this year's Oscars ceremony.


On the make


Aspiring make-up artists should look into the courses run by the International Health and Beauty Institute this month. Visiting expert Roger Berhou will teach beginners (September 19-22) and advanced students (September 23-26), covering everything from basic application to the latest techniques for stage and television (enquiries: 2544-8933).


Eye catchers


Ergonomic design and asymmetrical silhouettes are the signature of TATTO-O-, the latest in a line of graphic German eyewear from Puyi Optical (tel: 2424-9339), which has outlets in the Metropole Building and Hyatt Regency in Tsim Sha Tsui. Conceived by husband-and-wife team Marion and Paris Frost, the handmade glasses are a favourite of singer William So, who has just bought the Pinboard Butterfly frame (above). Other frames that stand out this season include Bamboo (right) and First Aid (above right).


Spruced up


'Turn heads, set the tone, be informed, have it first' is the coverline of Spruce, the new fashion glossy from Wallpaper* pioneer Tyler Brule. The biannual magazine, which describes itself as a 'tonic against the less attractive aspects of globalisation', eshews unwearable fashion and quotes prices in everything from yen to euros. Inside, you'll find features on plastic-surgery theatres in Tehran, shopping in South America, a pull-out pattern and a fashion shoot titled 'Garments to get you laid'. Well worth the $135 cover price then.
