Priceless heritage

I refer to the report headlined 'Japanese urge Tung to preserve SAR's heritage' (South China Morning Post, August 10).

A Japanese travel association has urged the SAR Government to 'preserve its historic urban sites' if it does not want to lose its appeal to visitors.

I do not understand the Government's policy on tourism.

I don't think tourists are all that interested in shopping for jewellery or visiting Ocean Park.

Hong Kong has a long history, and we have a number of historic buildings which are worth visiting.

However, as construction work goes on with urban-area renewal, many of these buildings are being demolished to make way for high-rise developments.

If it wants to attract more tourists, the Government should pay more attention to preservation of our historic urban heritage. It is absurd that we need to be reminded by people from abroad.
