Prisoners end hunger strike
INMATES at Stanley Prison yesterday ended a two-day hunger strike over claims of unsatisfactory food provided by the Correctional Services Department.
All those who went on hunger strike are awaiting appeal against their sentences or convictions. They resumed eating last night.
Yesterday, 25 inmates refused breakfast, but by lunch time the number of protesters had dropped to three.
The hunger strike began on Friday when 50 of the 2,000 inmates at the prison expressed dissatisfaction over the fish served for dinner.
All of them refused breakfast and lunch on Saturday.
A Government spokesman said those who participated in the hunger strike would not be punished.
''The Correctional Services Department staff have advised them to take food but it is their right to choose whether to eat or not,'' the spokesman said.
