Chinese language papers denounce terrorism in US

Updated at 6.14pm: The fatal terrorist strikes in the United States were condemned by Hong Kong's Chinese language newspapers on Wednesday.

The Oriental Daily News compared the terror attacks with Japan's surprise bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1941.

''These well-planned and careful attacks are like a war,'' the paper said in its editorial.

The Ming Pao Daily News wrote that the attacks had jeopardised US security and sounded a warning to the international community about how devastating terrorism could be.

''The US Government should think carefully about its foreign policy, especially in the Middle-East,'' the paper said.

The Sing Tao Daily predicted the attacks would lead to instability on global markets and disrupt US currency and oil prices.

The Apple Daily said that September 11, 2001 would become one of the most ''unforgetable'' days in US history.

The Wen Wei Po described the strikes as ''ruthless and cruel'' but said lessons could be learnt.

''Many countries will be able to improve security and safety at at their airports,'' the paper said.
