Bloodletting is likely to continue unabated

The indignation people feel towards the terrorist attacks in New York City [and Washington] is easy to understand.

However, we have to ask why these terrorists were so well prepared. Why were they willing to kill themselves and thousands of innocent Americans?

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that we have become so blase about the Palestinian suicide bombers in the Middle East. We see news reports about them as we sit in the comfort of our homes in New York, Washington and Hong Kong.

We consider these zealots crazy and are appalled by Palestinian men, women and children's celebrations honouring terrorists. Unfortunately, too often, we look at the American media uncritically. We are too ready to take the American side.

The US will retaliate, and the vicious cycle of violence epitomised by the present conflict in Israel will continue.

George W. Bush's administration has deliberately avoided mediating in the Middle East since it came into office in January. So we have an arrogant American Government, a brutal Israeli administration and the tens of thousands of suffering Palestinian refugees who feel they have no future. More innocent people will die.

I hope not everyone is determined to live by the age-old code 'An eye for an eye'.
