What about the IRA?

George W. Bush has stated that his country is at war with terrorism. But for years Irish Republican Army terrorists have raised money, been on chat shows and sought sanctuary in the United States. Will the war include them?

Following expected American logic, it would be permissible for Britain to bomb bars in Boston, as they harbour fundraisers for terrorism. France has joined the indignation. Can I look forward to the re-arrest of French agents who committed an act of terrorism against the Greenpeace vessel in Auckland Harbour, or does the war exclude them too?

Mr Bush calls the war a crusade, an inappropriate term. If he knew any history, he would realise that the Crusades were not the high point of European civilisation. They were murderous, killing many, not just the intended target, lasted centuries and achieved little.
