Now more airport taxi bays

I REFER to the letter headlined, ''Give people equal chance'' from your reader Ms Monica Lai, which appeared in the South China Morning Post on June 23. Her compliments regarding the self help trolley service at Kai Tak Airport are appreciated.

To answer Ms Lai's comment on the taxi queue, may I take this opportunity to explain the improvements undertaken at the transport terminus to cater for the increasing demand for taxis by arriving passengers.

The Airport Transport Terminus was modified last year and, as a result, the number of simultaneous taxi loading bays have been increased from 10 to 13.

Taxi loading bays are located on both sides of the transport terminus, with passengers queueing along the centre. Queue railings guide passengers to the taxi loading bays similar to the system used for queueing at banks. However, to cater for the volume of arriving passengers, mostly laden with heavy baggage, attendants are also necessary to regulate the flow of passengers and to assist the passenger loading process.

The approach road to the transport terminus has recently been widened to two lanes for queueing taxis, with road markings directing taxis to simultaneously feed the loading bays on each side of the passenger queue island. This traffic improvement balances the flow of taxis and enhances the passenger loading process.

The comments from Ms Lai regarding the attendant are noted. We will take positive steps to ensure that all passengers at the taxi queue will have a fair and equal chance to obtain transportation.
