Everyone would love extended tram routes

The letter headlined 'Pedal-power policy would be good for commuters' health' (South China Morning Post, November 26), raised the very welcome point about encouraging the use of bicycles, especially on Hong Kong Island and around Kowloon.

In the same vein, I would like to suggest that Hong Kong develops its tramways.

We take the trams for granted. They are much-loved, they save energy, they do not pollute, and they add character to the city.

Why should the tram stop at Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan? I think if there was a tram running all the way round Hong Kong Island, it would be unique in the world.

It would be a drawcard, like the Peak Tram and would be immensely popular with visitors and residents alike. It would certainly provide a service, and a trip, which would be available nowhere else.

The operating times of the trams should also be extended. Why not have all-night trams on weekends, perhaps running every 15 minutes, like the buses? Trams should also be considered on Kowloon side.

Trams, bicycles, and pedestrianised streets go together in making cities friendlier, calmer, and cleaner.
