A top designer yesterday gave the proposed new police uniform high marks for style.

The blue uniform, which would see skirts for women officers finally cast aside and the end to the century-old green outfit in summer, has been designed by fashion chain G2000.

Police Assistant Commissioner Steve Chandler said the uniform incorporated six basic concepts: uniformity, unisex, practicality, layering, comfort and safety.

'Our aim is to provide a working dress which can meet the changing needs of a modern police force by offering a comfortable, safe and practical uniform, while at the same time providing a smart and professional appearance,' Mr Chandler said.

Top designer William Tang Tat-chi said: 'The unisex and uniformity concepts are very good. The design can maintain the image of the force. I'll give it 90 marks out of 100.' He deducted 10 marks because of what he claimed was an over-sized epaulette.

Police management will decide whether to adopt the new design in May after a force-wide consultation, which started yesterday.
