Tunnel cashier hit by van in toll lane
A Lion Rock Tunnel cashier was in serious condition last night after she was hit by a light-goods vehicle in one of the toll lanes yesterday.
The 52-year-old cashier suffered serious head and neck injuries and was taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital.
Police said the woman was knocked down by the van, which was travelling towards Sha Tin, as she crossed a toll lane at about 9am.
Officers were told that the 27-year-old driver had mistaken the lane as an auto-toll lane and failed to stop until he had passed the toll counter. The driver passed a breath test.
Last August, another worker at Lion Rock Tunnel was killed after being hit by a vehicle while he was crossing the toll-collecting area.
Since then, the tunnel company has issued a notice urging staff to use a designated path to cross the area.
The Transport Department, which manages the tunnel, refused to comment as police are still investigating yesterday's accident.
Eleven people were injured in a crash involving a light-goods vehicle and a car in Fanling Road yesterday afternoon.
The injured, aged between three and 68, were admitted to Northern Hospital and Nethersole Hospital in Tai Po.
A four-year-old girl, who was unconscious after suffering serious head injuries in the crash, was later transferred to the Prince of Wales Hospital.
