Unicef will take coins

I refer to the letter from Peter Wynn Williams headlined 'Chance for charities' (South China Morning Post, January 3).

I too looked for a local charity that was capitalising on the introduction of the euro and collecting the old coins. Certainly many European Union charities have done so. I was unable to find any specific endeavour.

However, the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) does accept donations of foreign coins on a continuous basis (phone - 2833-6139), so I gathered up the surplus coins of my family and friends and delivered them to their office.

Given Hong Kong's vast and varied travelling population, there must be a substantial amount of soon-to-be worthless coins out there.
