Library users would welcome late closing

Hong Kong's public libraries should not be closed during public holidays and opening hours must be extended on Saturdays and Sundays.

During the week Hong Kong Central Library stays open till 9pm, but on Saturdays and Sundays, it closes at 6pm. Over the Christmas period it was closed on December 25 and 26 and on January 1, and closed early on December 24 and 31.

Hong Kong citizens and tourists alike enjoy the library's wonderful facilities. People who visit the building are encouraged to study and learn, which must surely be welcomed by our Chief Executive who has emphasised the need for 'lifelong learning'. However, at the very times most of us are free to study, the library is closed. If the Central Library stayed open on public holidays and extended its hours till 9pm on Saturdays and Sundays, more people would be encouraged to stay in the SAR rather than going over the border to spend money.

Such a policy should be applied to all our public libraries.
