SAR success inspires student athletes

Words of encouragement helped competitors achieve great results at the Chinese Manufacturers' Association Secondary School's 26th annual athletic meet at Wan Chai Sports Ground.

The meet was opened by school principal John Fan Kam-ping who is also the chairman of the School Sports Federation.

Mr Fan drew attention to the success of Hong Kong's athletes to inspire the student competitors.

Hong Kong athletes recently clinched two gold, two silver and one bronze medal in cycling, windsurfing, athletics and tennis against the mainland's best at China's Ninth National Games.

Mr Fan urged students to use the success of the National Games medallists and the school's remarkable athletic record in their moral and academic pursuits.

Events at the meet included high jump, shot put, javelin and track events.

Athletes competed vigorously and with plenty of determination throughout the competition.

The stands were decorated with colourful banners, flags, windmills, fans and balloons. The cheering teams played tambourines and drums and shouted slogans at the top of their voices.

Guest-of-honour Lo Man-tuen, chairman of the Wing Li Group, presented medals and trophies to the winners.

Mr Lo praised the athletes for their excellent performances.
