Forgive deserters

I refer to the letter from Jeffry Kuperus headlined 'Why should employers be altruistic now?' (South China Morning Post, January 25).

Mr Kuperus was taking issue with the Government's request to employers to keep on as many workers as possible, as unemployment continues to rise.

Your correspondent said that during the good times, employees showed no loyalty and kept switching jobs. He is correct.

Maybe the Government should have phrased its request more diplomatically and asked employers to forgive their former staff members who jumped ship.

I urge businesses to keep on as many workers as they can if they want to avoid serious unrest in our society.
