Going bananas over Ronnie's 'show of the year' role

RONNIE Yip Yuk-hing's conversion to superstar status continues unabated with news she is to star in the ''show of the year, if not the decade''.

Forget a certain M. Jackson's scheduled, although increasingly doubtful, appearance at Sha Tin next month. The place to be is Joe Bananas on July 31 when Ronnie does a turn on stage in front of a baying audience, at least according to the Wan Chai night spot's promotional material.

Her appearance is not a sign Joe Bananas' chest hair and gold medallion-wearing audience has suddenly decided Canto-pop is a welcome alternative to the type of 1970s disco normally throbbing through the PA system.

Instead, Yip is appearing courtesy of Metro's FM Select Channel as part of an Australian beer promotion, warbling Saving All My Love For You and two Cantonese numbers over a backing track.

With her category III film days behind her, we trust she is aware that women making stage appearances at the Luard Road club normally end up wearing little else but a smile as the annual Miss Wet T-Shirt contest traditionally gets out of hand.
