Canadian firm wins computer contracts
A CANADIAN computer firm has won the initial phases of a C$50 million (about HK$300 million) contract by the China National Petroleum Committee to provide equipment for several mainland oil-field projects.
Toronto-based Onyx Computers Inc, in association with Canadian and Chinese subsidiaries of US-based Digital Equipment, announced it had beaten several other North American companies for the first three phases of a 10-phase contract.
Under the deal, it will supply the state-run organisation with $15 million worth of seismic data processing equipment and systems integration back-up services for projects in Nanyang, in Henan, Haubei, near Beijing and Daqing, near Harbin.
''As our first project, the Nanyang site is the key because it will serve to formulate a standard for China,'' said Onyx vice-president Shelton Pollack.
''We have installed the largest Digital VAX system in China there and are shipping the equipment to supply the larger site at Daqing next month.
''We are confident that we will be awarded all or at least the majority of the seven remaining [contracts] within the next 12 months, but that has yet to be confirmed,'' he said, adding that 17 officials from China National Petroleum were in Toronto to attend a training course on the systems.
He would not disclose the locations of the remaining exploration areas.
