Why should divers get special treatment?

I refer to the letter from Anni Chi headlined 'Unfair surcharge' (South China Morning Post, March 7) concerning the baggage surcharge levied by United Airlines for the shipment of her scuba diving equipment.

I am surprised by her statement that most airlines allow divers a luggage allowance of up to 30kg. Many passengers carrying equipment for other leisure activities such as golf or windsurfing would be interested to hear of such an arrangement. Not to mention travellers who have to incur additional charges for merely taking presents or gifts to loved ones during holiday periods.

I would suggest that on the supposedly rare occasion an extra charge is incurred your reader should pay the charge or simply not carry the equipment.
