Information meant to be stored is growing at such a fast pace it comes as no surprise that the small priesthood of scientists in the storage industry has put precise words to match certain quantities of data. The following is a list of estimates of data quantities contained by various media. It was compiled mainly by research scientist Roy Williams of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

'The numbers quoted are approximate. In fact, a kilobyte is 1,024 bytes, not 1,000 bytes. But this fact does not keep me awake at night,' he says.

Readers are invited to consider other items that they are familiar with that carry information and try to match them against the specific storage quantities listed here.
