Sheer madness

I fully agree with the comments made by Terry Preece (South China Morning Post, April 19) and others regarding why tourists enjoy visiting Stanley.

One evening last week, my wife and I took a visitor from the UK to Stanley Market to purchase gifts to take home to his children. I mentioned the threat to replace the market with some kind of modern shopping centre. Our visitor was horrified at the thought of Stanley losing such an interesting market and thought that any plan to replace it was sheer madness. We visited the various stalls and shops and were met with smiling faces and courteous people eager to serve us well. Our visitor easily found the bargains he wanted and enjoyed wandering around such a colourful place.

If the market is replaced with a modern building, my wife and I will not shop there and we will not take our visitors there.
