Competition boosts word power

The search for 'Miss Scrabble' was on at Our Lady's College recently. The idea for the competition based on the popular word game came from the Hollywood film Miss Congeniality.

However, the champion of the Scrabble contest did not win because of her looks but her knowledge of English vocabulary.

The competition was jointly organised by the school's English and logic/fun clubs. The aim was to raise students' interest in learning English and expand their vocabulary.

Students from Forms One to Four were invited to take part in the activity.

Competition was keen as 35 participants competed for the Miss Scrabble crown. Though it was the first time that many participants had played the game, they said it was quite 'player-friendly'.

'I never knew that such a word existed' was often heard during the competition as students tried their luck putting letters together in the hope that the 'words' they made up could be found in the dictionary. The entertaining game helped students learn lots of new words.

Besides the Scrabble competition, the school holds regular activities to encourage students to speak English outside of the classroom, such as English-speaking days held every Thursday. There are also lunchtime shows performed by different classes. By staging and watching storytelling sessions, dramas, sketches and 'advertisements', students can learn English in a fun and informal setting.
