Pudong out to lure overseas talent
Shanghai's Pudong district is opening its wallet to lure top talent from abroad.
Headhunters from government agencies and corporations in Pudong have left on a tour of the United States, Canada and Hong Kong in a bid to fill 164 senior vacancies, said an official of the Pudong New Area Government.
They are offering salaries from 200,000 yuan (HK$188,000) to 1.2 million yuan a year to attract skilled executives and managers to the Pudong district, a focus of government development efforts.
Pudong needs to find talent to meet the challenges of increased competition amid rapid globalisation, according to the district government Web site.
Twelve years ago, Shanghai began a massive programme to develop Pudong, then a backwater area that lacked transport and housing. Since then the city has spent heavily on bridges, tunnels and public transport and has made a major effort to attract foreign investment to the area.
The talent-search group includes representatives of 35 government departments and corporations, including Zhangjiang High Technology Park, the Lujiazui, Jinqiao and Waigaoqiao development zone companies as well as the Pudong operations of the Agricultural Bank of China and Citic Industrial.
They will target specialists in management, finance, pharmaceutical testing and inspection, biomedicine and information technology, among other fields. Government jobs to be filled range from section chief to deputy director at the bureau level.
The group will stop in Boston, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver, where Chinese studying abroad may be a focus of their attention. The tour will meet prospective job applicants in Hong Kong on May 4-5 at the China Resources Building.
