Wrong term

There is a great deal of talk in Hong Kong newspapers, including yours, these days about developing the idea of alfresco dining.

It has been confirmed to me that in the sense of 'eating outdoors' this word is incorrectly used. The term alfresco apparently refers to prisoners being allowed out into a prison yard for fresh air.

The term mangiare all'aperto is the correct Italian term for outdoor eating. Perhaps due to our own environment alfresco may, after all, be correct. Perhaps Italians in Hong Kong could shed more light on the use of this term.
