Arafat betrayed his own people

In your editorial of May 3 headlined 'Talking peace' you refer to Yasser Arafat as a 'national hero'.

He is, in fact, one of the fathers of modern terrorism who the international community decided to treat as a statesman for purely strategic reasons.

We must not delude ourselves. He is still a terrorist and our well-intentioned exercise in feigning respect for him has utterly failed.

Instead of reforming Mr Arafat, we have provided him with unearned credibility and sympathy which serve as a cover for his continued terror. He has betrayed his own people by not displaying leadership and by instead using his tight control of the media and money to incite Palestinian youths to hate and kill.

Those who laud him might want to ask themselves if they would be willing to live in a state under his rule.
