Switch on the 7s fun!
English Premiership sides Arsenal, Aston Villa and West Ham are among a rich array of talent appearing in the 2002 HKFC Philips Lighting International Soccer 7s this weekend.
There is a nostalgic World Cup flavour, too, with former German goal-machine Jurgen Klinsmann due to play for Lorenz All Stars, while ex-England internationals John Barnes and Chris Waddle will line up for Philips All Stars.
The third instalment of this annual event will be held on Saturday and Sunday at Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC). It will be split into two competitions - the main tournament and the Masters. European teams Glasgow Celtic and PSV Eindhoven, along with Shanghai Shenhua and Korea's Myongji University (winners of this year's Philips Asian University Football Invitational Tournament), will play in the main event, with the former international stars competing in the Masters.
Local clubs taking part in the main tournament include South China, Sun Hei FC, Rangers, HKFC, Happy Valley and Yau Yee Select.
Each of the 32 teams - placed in eight groups - will play three round-robin matches (two seven-minute halves in each game). The top two teams from each group advance to the knock-out stages of the Cup tournament on Sunday, while third and fourth placed teams will contest the Plate championship.
HKFC and Philips Lighting are organising a series of soccer clinics to be conducted by star players for local secondary and university students on Thursday and Friday at 4.30 pm.
