A textbook gender issue

We call your attention to the findings of an Equal Opportunities Commission survey on students' attitudes on stereotyping and an analysis of textbooks.

The Hong Kong Association of Business and Professional Women fully supports the efforts of the commission. From the survey, 'Research Findings on Stereotyping: A Call for Diversity', the following messages were elicited: Stereotyping exists in the Hong Kong education system and affects both genders. The role of women may have changed but they are still depicted in an outdated manner in textbooks. This, in turn, affects how young people think and the way they see themselves.

The elimination of stereotyping would help girls and boys to reach their full potential. Our association agrees with Anna Wu, chairwoman of the Equal Opportunities Commission, that 'it is important that girls and boys are equipped to make the best possible choice in a changing society'.

Stereotyping limits life choices for young people, restricting their chances of achieving their full potential.

The commission's vision is about opening doors for every individual. Challenging stereotypes will enable young people of both sexes to discover new horizons.
