Let motorbikes have Autotoll tags

I noted with interest the letters from Alec Gore and Nick Pearson regarding Autotoll and motorcycles (South China Morning Post, April 12 and 16, respectively).

I have also written to the Transport Department and Autotoll about this issue, but have not received replies.

I agree with your correspondents that the current system is unsatisfactory, dangerous and a nuisance to motorcyclists and other road users. Motorcyclists should be allowed to use Autotoll at Hong Kong's tunnels. I found the Commissioner for Transport's reply that Autotoll doesn't work on bikes (Post, May 13) odd, given that Autotoll tags are being fitted to police motorcycles so their riders can enter police stations without having to dismount.

If Autotoll for motorcycles is such a difficult proposition (though overseas systems seem to work fine), why not provide a separate toll-booth for motorbikes only?

This would save cars from having to queue behind the motorcycle, it would prevent bikes from jumping the queue, and it would smooth the flow of traffic.

I look forward to the Commissioner for Transport's response, through these columns.
