Harry Wu invited to speak on rights

Chinese human rights activist Harry Wu Hongda, who was deported from Hong Kong in April, has been invited to attend a civil rights conference in the territory this month.

The newly elected chairman of the Foreign Correspondents' Club, Thomas Crampton, said Mr Wu would sit on a panel of speakers at a seminar marking the fifth anniversary of the handover.

He told the RTHK television programme Media Watch last night that Mr Wu would speak to the conference via telephone if he were prevented from entering Hong Kong. Mr Wu, who holds an American passport, was denied entry into Hong Kong in April.

A government security source said Mr Wu was turned back because of a planned meeting with dissident Frank Lu Siqing to discuss the setting up of a branch of Mr Wu's China Information Centre.

Crampton said Mr Wu was expected to talk about freedom of passage during the June 25 conference, entitled 'Four Freedoms, Five Years After the Handover'.
