Partnership to help manufacturers

City University of Hong Kong is partnering with Microsoft Hong Kong to help firms develop software systems for supply-chain automation and streamlining logistics.

Richard Fung Ying-kit, director of Enterprise Knowledge Integration and Transfer Laboratory in the University's Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management, said there was an abundance of management software on the market but not much was designed for the manufacturing industry.

'Different industries have their own communication or EDI [electronic data interchange] document standard,' he said.

'Companies find it difficult to select suitable software because not much is tailor-made for manufacturing firms.'

The lab will offer a three-day, free feasibility service to selected firms. The university will send teaching staff, undergraduate or postgraduate students to help the companies to develop their own solutions.
