Before dinner: Has your World Cup well and truly runneth over? Do you wish Cable TV's Go Go Goal! guys had by now just got up and gone? How about a complete break from the madness? Begin your night in the quiet, comfortable surrounds of the Chater Lounge (Ritz-Carlton,

3 Connaught Road, Central. Tel: 2532 2059). Slide into a couch and get the conversation started with a cocktail (starting at $65) or choose from an excellent wine selection - by the bottle (starting at $320) or glass (starting at $64). The Cosmopolitans are superb, although a bit stiff at $120 - but, hey, live a little. And the bar snacks (including delicious taro chips) are perfect for whetting your appetite.

Dinner: Continue to surround yourself in decadent decor by heading into Central and The Pavilion (2 Tun Wo Lane, Central. Tel: 2869 7768) - another football-free zone. The atmosphere is relaxed - especially if you get the private room at the back - and the menu includes delights such as Scottish smoked salmon and chive sour cream wrapped in dill crepe and topped with king salmon roe ($95), or for a main try pan-fried veal served with shiitake mushrooms, duck liver coated with black and white sesame seeds and a calvados sauce ($195). There's also El Pomposo next door if tapas takes your fancy.

After dinner: Round the night off with a short walk up the hill where you'll find Club Feather Boa (G/F, 38 Staunton Street, Central. Tel: 2857 2586). Standard drinks start at $35 and once you pass through the curtained doors into its antique-laden opulence, football will be the furthest thing from your mind.
