Rule change essential
I agree with the views of your correspondents Tony Yuen and K Y Tsui, whose letters appeared under the headline 'Video replays can ensure fair result' (South China Morning Post, June 29).
The only way to improve refereeing standards at the next World Cup is to introduce video replays for referees. This is a standard practice in rugby union and rugby league, American football, and cricket.
Why should association football be the odd one out in this respect?
I am sure the Spanish fans would not have minded waiting a few minutes to find out whether Joaqin Sanchez's cross in the quarter-final match with South Korea was really out of play. And what would have happened to the outcome of the game between Belgium and Brazil had Mark Wilmot's goal been allowed? It is pointless for the referee to apologise to a player after the match, when he realises he made a wrong decision.
An incorrect ruling must be corrected during a match. The game of football is doomed if it cannot move with the times.
