Police call over fortune tricksters

HONGKONG police are urging tourists and residents who have been victims of bogus fortune-tellers to report incidents to them.

The appeal follows revelations in Monday's South China Morning Post that the tricksters, who often claim to be mystics from India, have been approaching people in the street and conning them out of hundreds of dollars by using simple conjuring tricks.

''We would like to hear of incidents like this so we can keep a record of the activities of these people,'' a police spokesman said.

Critics have said that while the practice is legal, it is considered ethically dubious.
