Steep price rise

Cheung Kong

As a frequent shopper at ParknShop I am writing to ask, through these columns, why its prices on various goods have gone up, in some cases, by more than 30 per cent in the last few weeks.

Most of the goods to which I refer are imported and so a price increase is understandable because of the weakening value of the US dollar. However, the greenback has only gone down by about 10 per cent, so how can the supermarket chain justify a 30 per cent increase in prices?

Also when the US dollar strengthens, will we return to the cheaper prices?
