Language problems
In his letter to these columns on July 17, Bill Wong expressed support for mother-tongue teaching in Hong Kong.
I am a Form Seven student and I attend a mother-tongue school. However, I do not think I am benefiting from being taught in Chinese.
You can learn some subjects more easily if you are taught in your mother tongue. However, it does not improve your standard of English.
Some people argue that pupils at mother-tongue schools can improve their English by reading English-language newspapers and magazines.
However, many Hong Kong students prefer to spend their spare time at Cyber cafes and reading comics, rather than studying. They do not appreciate that learning English is a long and hard process.
Pupils at schools where English is the medium of instruction, have a better chance to learn the language and improve their language skills.
