Girl, 10, hangs herself after arguing with mother

A 10-year-old girl was found hanged in a Tuen Mun flat last night after having an argument with her mother about attending summer tuition classes.

The girl's mother, 38, returned home to their Tai Hing Estate flat from her job as an amah at 7.15pm to find the Primary Six pupil hanging from a pipe in the sitting room. She was believed to have been dead for several hours.

The mother told police that before she left for work yesterday morning she had reminded her daughter to go to her summer lessons.

Later, while at work at the Caritas Medical Centre in Shamshuipo, she telephoned her daughter and reminded her again to go to the lessons.

She said she scolded her and hung up the phone after the girl said she did not want to go. She later tried to call her daughter again but the phone went unanswered.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and classified the girl's death as suicide.

In a separate case, firemen broke open a locked bathroom door in a flat at Hong Nga Court in Yau Tong and found an Indonesian domestic helper, 21, hanging inside.

She was certified dead at the scene.
