Smartal adds census disk

Hong Kong software firm Smartal Solutions has won the contract to produce and market a CD-ROM based on the government's 2001 Population Census.

The company has worked with the Census and Statistics Department since 1992, producing three disks to date.

'Supermap Hong Kong 2001' will include detailed census data on digital maps. The Supermap disk is based on a Geographical Information System (GIS) platform, which displays data according to location. Smartal says this makes the product more useful to government departments and marketing firms who need to analyse the latest population data to determine strategies.

Commissioner for Census and Statistics Frederick Ho Wing-huen said the development of the three disks 'involved substantial application of GIS technology to geo-referenced data. The performance of Smartal Solutions on these occasions was very satisfactory in our view'.
