To sightsee: California
Driving along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway 1 is like poetry on four wheels. The motorway spans northern and southern California and opens to panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The smoothness of the road and the chilly wind that comes off the ocean is so soothing. There are never-ending surprises on the way - sandy beaches, steep cliffs rising from the pounding surf, the Golden Gate Bridge and historic Victorian-style villages.

To shop: New York
I love bookstores that have their own character and the Shakespeare & Co chain in New York is the best example. It stocks publications on a wide range of subjects and also some rare collectable editions. It's where the avant-garde and intellectuals hang out - the late Salvador Dali used to go there and apparently Woody Allen still does. It's cosy and you can snuggle up on the sofas with a book and one of the several cats that roam freely around the stores (www.shakeandco.com).
