I WAS horrified to read the article dealing with the practice of using executed prisoners in China as kidney ''donors'' (Sunday Morning Post, July 25). Many of these people have been summarily convicted of petty crimes.

It is already to our great collective shame that at a time when the death penalty has been abolished in the territory, many Hong Kong citizens condone and encourage this practice by going to Guangdong or sending sick relatives for kidney transplants.

I also find it worrying that the dean of one of our two medical schools, Professor Arthur Li, apparently said with scant thought for the ethics involved: ''I told them if they would show me written consent from the prisoners and I would not have to give one cent, I was willing to take them.'' Such written agreement is unlikely to include consent to execution, nor is the procedure likely to have had Ethical Committee clearance! And might not the People's Republic of China Government even be tempted to give such kidneys to the Prince of Wales Hospital and pay the Prison Authority's cut for this obscene procedure from central funds, in the interests of feeding their propaganda machine and spreading the guilt?
