Can someone explain exorbitant cost?

The waste of a donor liver in Hong Kong was indeed a tragedy, not least because it may discourage future potential organ donors from making what may be a life-saving decision.

Of course, it must never be allowed to happen again.

However, what interests me, and I am sure many of your readers, is how the cost of $1 million is calculated for a liver transplant operation.

If one presumes that most, if not all, of the doctors and nursing staff engaged in the operations are being paid monthly salaries by the Hospital Authority, the additional expenses incurred seem quite exorbitant.

A breakdown of the sums involved and a comparison with costs for a similar operation in other territories would be very interesting.
