I refer to the letter by Mark Chan headlined 'Trees should be planted in fertile soil' (South China Morning Post, August 14).

The trees along Ting Kok Road, near Shuen Wan, were planted by the Territory Development Department (TDD) and formed part of a road improvement project.

This project was not connected with the $26 million greening programme initiated by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

We share Mr Chan's concern about the importance of planting trees on good and fertile soil. This has all along been our practice. We have passed on your correspondent's comments to the TDD, which has told its contractors to remove rubble from the area and replace it with planting soil mix.

The TDD will closely monitor the maintenance work undertaken on all the newly planted trees in its road improvement projects.
