Innocent victims on both sides suffer in the war on terrorism

Since September 11 last year, the United States government has been reminding the world that the victims of 9/11 are heroes to be remembered. So yesterday it was not surprising to see Hong Kong - as more of a 'Western' city than others - side with the US in the latest opinion survey ('Hong Kong people back American policy: poll,' South China Morning Post).

While September 11 was a true tragedy and terrorism in all forms should be condemned, it is important to remind ourselves that innocent Arabs, particularly Palestinian children, are also dying as a result of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory. The US has been siding with Israel for years, providing the Israelis with arms and financial resources.

It is fine to remember the victims of September 11 at any gatherings today, but let us also remember the innocent victims of the US-led war against terrorism which is continuing, right through this very day.

I join those who want to remember and pray for the innocent civilians who were killed in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania last year.

I also join those who remember and pray for the innocent civilians who were killed in Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel and Palestine.

And I add my voice to the chorus of those who call on all leaders, whether they head political groups or be leaders of countries, who too readily resort to war and violence to resolve political problems, to stop using violence in attempts to solve problems.

Let all people of good will pray for the dead, but let us also pray that more people will speak out and oppose those reckless politicians whose rush to use violence will only ensure the deaths of more innocent civilians.
