Police do take action against jaywalkers

I refer to the letter from 'Name and Address Supplied' headlined 'Lazy jaywalkers putting themselves at risk' (Sunday Morning Post, August 25).

Your correspondent is correct in pointing out that for those pedestrians who ignore road safety regulations, it is only a matter of time before they are involved in a traffic accident.

The police frequently conduct operations throughout Hong Kong to take enforcement action against jaywalkers; 972 summonses were issued to jaywalking offenders in 2001.

We have also mounted numerous publicity campaigns to disseminate road safety messages to the public. Regarding the jaywalking problem on Li Yuen Street East, our officers attached to Police Central district will monitor the situation and take the appropriate enforcement action.
