Cutting Edge: The Science Of Sleep

Pearl, 9.30pm

We spend one-third of our lives sleeping, yet we understand little about sleep - and how critical it is, not just for our survival, but for our safety, productivity and performance. In America alone, one in five people are so sleepy during the day that it sometimes interferes with what they do. Operator fatigue is believed to be responsible for 21 per cent of aviation incidents and 31 per cent of heavy truck accidents. In the past century, society seems to have adopted the attitude that sleep is negotiable, even a luxury. This documentary explores what happens when we are deprived of sleep and investigates current research into a variety of sleep disorders.
