Top SAR duo bowled over

Hong Kong's tenpin bowlers were expected to sweep all before them at the Asian Games. But defending champion in the masters event, Sunny Hui Cheung-kwok, and East Asian Games gold medallist, Wu Siu-hong, have been swinging duds in Busan so far.

At the time of writing, former world number one Hui and world junior champion Wu looked likely to miss out on the prestigious competition starting today.

The top 16 players in doubles, trios, singles and team events at the Games qualify for the masters.

In Sunday's trios, along with teammate Chung Him, the SAR pair finished a disappointing 23rd out of 31 entries. Hui and Wu were also eclipsed in the men's singles last week by their teammate Eric Lau Kwok-yau.

Lau placed just outside the medals in fifth, while Wu trailed in 31st position with Hui in 57th.

Hong Kong fared a little better in the doubles when Hui paired up with Chung Him to finish sixth. Hopes of a bowling medal now rest with the SAR women, Janet Lam Yim and Vanessa Fung Suet-yee, who yesterday looked set to qualify for today's first round of the masters competition.

Gold medal matches in both men's and women's masters are scheduled for early tomorrow afternoon.
