UN listens to pilots' pleas

Bonn (Oct 18): West German police commandos blasted their way into the hijacked Lufthansa jet at Somalia's Mogadishu airport early today and freed all 86 hostages - 90 minutes before a deadline to blow it up.

United Nations (Oct 22): Angry airline pilots have postponed their threatened 48-hour worldwide strike after the United Nations agreed to a quick full-session debate on air piracy.

The International Federation of Airline Pilots Associations had called the strike for Tuesday to protest against the killing of a West German Lufthansa pilot by hijackers five days ago.

But the Federation's Hongkong-based President, Captain Derry Pearce, said that the strike had been indefinitely postponed after meetings with the UN Secretary-General, Dr Kurt Waldheim, and other officials.

Strike struck

Canberra (Oct 19): The Federal Government rushed through tough new anti-strike legislation before Parliament tonight.

The action was in response to a crippling power strike in Victoria, which threatens to plunge the country into its worst industrial crisis in 32 years.
