SAR women go out on winning note

Odense, Denmark: Hong Kong finished 11th at the World Women's Squash Team Championship after overcoming Ireland 2-1 in the playoff for 11th place yesterday. Newly-crowned Asian Games women's singles champion Rebecca Chiu Wing-yin lost 9-1, 9-1, 10-8 to Madeline Perry in the opening rubber but teammates Christina Mak Wai-ying and Karen Lau Siu-ying rose to the occasion to win the next two rubbers. Mak beat Aisling Blake in the second rubber 6-9, 9-7, 0-9, 9-5, 9-4 while Lau defeated Aisling McArdle in the decisive rubber 9-3, 9-3, 9-7. Top seeds Australia took the title by edging second-seeded England 2-1 in final.
