New law will not affect tawdry media

Elsie Tu

Why all this fuss about freedom of the press in relation to Article 23 of the Basic Law?

What does the press do with the freedom it now has, freedom that will no doubt continue under Article 23?

The media's role is supposed to be to give the truth to readers, but how many in the media do that? Some offer only the truth that they want the public to know. Some attract readers by playing on the worst instincts of human nature. Others pry into the private affairs of targeted members of society and yet others put over outright lies for political reasons. Few, if any, tell the truth.

If we want to know the truth nowadays we must read widely from accredited authors, because investigative journalism appears to be a lost art. The media have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
