Highly cosmopolitan membership
Liam Fitzpatrick shared with Post Magazine readers his recollection of the United Services Recreation Club (USRC), in the article headlined 'Club sandwiched' (November 17).
I wholeheartedly agree with him that the USRC prides itself on catering to people from all walks of life, both internationally and domestically.
I am also pleased that the article highlighted the lush green and spacious environment and poolside dining, something of a rarity in Hong Kong. This indeed provides a unique setting in the heart of Kowloon.
Given the superb location of the club, it would be perfect if the reality of the modern world could be removed from the road leading to the USRC, however, we live in the real world and the ability to remove yourself from the traffic congestion is the next best thing to removing the congestion altogether.
It is unfortunate that Mr Fitzpatrick used most of the article to relate his experiences many years ago.
I would suggest that if what he described had been genuinely representative of the club back then, the USRC would not have seen the membership demographics change over the years to a situation where today it has a highly cosmopolitan membership.
The USRC has a character and charm unlike any other club in Hong Kong. It has a unique environment in which you can see the interaction of people from diverse backgrounds and has very hard-working staff.
It is this combination of culture, service and facilities that makes the USRC such a good club.
